Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reportedly told media on Thursday that he does not own any Bitcoin or NFT, but that he is optimistic about the future of cryptocurrencies and NFT.
"I don't own bitcoin," Mr. Jassy said in an interview.
"We may not be using cryptocurrencies as a payment mechanism for retail businesses yet, but I believe over time you will see cryptocurrencies become stronger," Jassy added.
It is understood that Amazon has previously expressed interest in cryptocurrencies. Last year, Amazon wanted to add a digital currency and blockchain expert to its payments team to help it develop a "strategy and product roadmap" around those technologies.
"I expect NFT to continue to grow significantly," Mr Jassy said.
He said he could see the e-commerce giant selling NFT in the future. NFT is digital assets -- from music to website domain names to digital art -- whose ownership is recorded on a blockchain.
"I think it's possible on the [Amazon] platform," he said.
NFT has gained wide popularity over the past year, and the technology has some overlap with cryptocurrency enthusiasts. NFT transactions reached $17.6 billion last year, up 21,000 percent from 2020, the data showed.
