Ethereum's founders claim to have contributed negative value to the world

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Butrin tweeted on Friday that he is no longer a billionaire, according to media reports.

In another tweet on Friday, Butlin said: "Eventually you will make a mistake in your beliefs, and (especially if you are in politics, but also in some other fields) correcting that mistake means acknowledging that your former self contributed negative value to the world."

He also discussed the tradeoff between "open mind" and "passion," while expressing support for the Ethereum blockchain he helped create. "Attention trolls: No, Ethereum is not a mistake," he wrote.

It is understood that Ethereum is an open source public blockchain platform with smart contract capabilities, providing decentralized Ethereum virtual machines to process peer-to-peer contracts through its dedicated cryptocurrency Ethereum.

The concept of Ethereum, loosely referred to as "the next generation of cryptocurrencies and decentralized application platforms", was first proposed by programmer Vitalik Buterin in 2013-14 after being inspired by Bitcoin, and began to develop through ICO crowdfunding in 2014.

As of February 2018, Ether was the second most valuable cryptocurrency after Bitcoin.

As of Friday, its namesake cryptocurrency had plunged 59% from its high of about $4,800 reached in November 2021. At its high point, Buterin's ethereum holdings were valued at $1.5 billion.
